For Christmas 2023 I was very kindly gifted an entry to the annual straight8 filmmaking challenge.

straight 8 began in london in 1999, so 2024 is it’s 25th anniversary. The rules are thus…

• Make a film on just one roll of super 8mm
• No re-takes, no editing, no grade, no post-production at all
• All your final visuals are made with each pull of the camera’s trigger
• No cheating because they process the film for you
• You even make your soundtrack ‘blind’ and straight 8 line it up to the first frame of picture

Out of 202 films this year, they selected a Top 8 for the Cannes film festival, a Top 25 for the BFI Imax, and after the Global Livestream of the Top 25 on Saturday 1st June the rest of the filmmakers receive a digital copy of their 8mm scan from CineLab. We were in the Top 202.
